Request for Mileage
Dear Friends,
We need your help. The Jada Bascom Foundation is preparing for the 2nd Steps To-Marrow Walk. The walk will take place in Europe from May to September 2012. Jeana will be walking in Germany, Switzerland and Italy, carrying our life saving message, “ With a simple cheek swab you can find out if you are the match that can save a life.” Jeana will begin the walk in Kiel, Germany at the beginning of May and will finish in Venice, Italy at the end of September. You can lend a hand by donating mileage from your frequent flyer program to help Jeana get from Spokane, WA to Kiel, Germany and then for the return trip from Venice, Italy back to Spokane.
Out of gratitude, Jeana Moore, Jada’s grandmother, created the Jada Bascom Foundation to help others find their match by educating and enrolling potential bone marrow donors with the Be The Match Registry. Recognizing that creativity, innovation and risk taking are essential to achieving meaningful outcomes the Jada Bascom Foundation initiated the Steps To-Marrow project, an inventive approach to enrolling potential donors. In Oct of 2009, Jeana began the first Steps To-Marrow project in which she walked over 4,400 miles across the USA and enrolled 3,600 new members with Be The Match. We know of 18 matches that resulted from these new donor registrations. As I mentioned before we are on the threshold of the 2nd Steps To-Marrow walk.
Though the Jada Bascom foundation is small, we have found a creative, inexpensive, and effective way to educate and recruit donors to realize our goal of finding a match for every patient in need. No individual should die while waiting for a match. It is imperative that we continue to raise awareness of the need for marrow donors, and how easy it is to join the registry with a simple cheek swab. For more information please contact your country’s bone marrow registry or center.
